Professional Landscape & Garden Design
Successful landscape and garden design work requires imagination. flair and creativity
together with an understanding and appreciation of several quite distinct skills.
It is unusual to find a person with all the necessary knowledge, skills, aptitude,
creativity and imagination to be competent in all the subject areas involved and
it is for this reason that clearly defined, but overlapping, divisions are so evident
within the profession.
Because of the range and interdependence of the skills and
knowledge required within the various areas, landscape and garden design, as a subject,
presents considerable difficulties to tutors and course authors, and it is perhaps
for this reason that we are one of the very few colleges that are able to offer comprehensive
home study courses covering all aspects of the subject. The main prerequisites for
successful garden design include a sound understanding of horticulture (the first
and most important element), design principles and practice, hard landscaping and
construction and, of course, business.
The IHRS Professional Garden Design group currently
comprises two core courses:
Garden Design -
Planting Design -
The pictures below show BBC presenters, the Principal, students and staff in the
IHRS show garden
‘Jungle Chic’ which, following an invitation from the RHS to enter,
was designed and constructed by a group of our Garden Design students and staff at
BBC “Gardeners’ World Live” 2004.
The garden was awarded a prestigious RHS GOLD MEDAL
and was featured on BBC2 Gardeners’ World. Understandably, both students and staff
were delighted.
