Module 2:      The Morphology of the Grapevine

 

Structure: Vegetative and Reproductive Anatomy ~ Developmental Physiology 1: The Vegetative Grapevine ~ Developmental Physiology 2: Flowering and Fruiting.

 

Module 3:      Growing Grapes 1

 

The Family Viticeae ~ Varietal Requirements ~ Soil and Situation ~ Soil Preparation ~ Areas of Grape Production ~ Table, Raisin and Wine Varieties.

 

Module 4:      Growing Grapes 2

 

An Outline of the Husbandry Requirements of the Various Vine Types in Different Parts of the World ~ Grape Production in the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Portugal, Italy, North America, South America, Africa and Australasia.

Diploma in Viticulture

 

The Diploma in Viticulture includes all the material from the Certificate course together with a detailed examination of the morphology of the grapevine and appropriate, extended coverage in each of the modules with regard to World-wide production.  Particular emphasis is placed on the history, methods of cultivation and production in France, Spain and Portugal, Italy, North America, South America, Africa and Australasia.  


It is, by its very nature, a highly specialized course and has been designed for students with a comprehensive background in horticultural science.  Students with no such previous experience will need to combine the course with an entry level horticultural course e.g. the RHS Level 2 and we suggest prospective students contact the Director of Studies for advice..

Module 6:      Harvesting

 

Stage of Fruit Growth and Ripening for Different Purposes ~ Harvesting techniques ~ Care in Handling ~ Post-Harvest Physiology ~ Storage.

Module 7:      Protected Cropping in Cooler Climates

 

Cultivation ~ Planting ~ Pruning ~ Care of Vines ~ Flowering and Pollination ~ Pests and Diseases ~ Harvesting under cover.
