Open and Distance Learning with the
Institute for Horticultural and Rural Studies

Open and Distance learning aspires to provide open access to a variety of learning opportunities for all, especially those who may not have any previous experience or formal qualifications within a particular field of interest.  Distance learning used to be represented by 'correspondence courses' and it means, quite simply, home study - you study at home, work or any other convenient venue - without the need to attend college or university for full or part-time 'classroom' or 'timetable' based and structured courses of study.

The written material for most of our courses is divided into modules, units and course study books.  The text is presented in a friendly style that is easy to read and understand, designed to ensure that students are guided carefully from each level to the next only when they feel comfortable and ready to move on.  It is for this reason that we send out study material in batches, keeping pace with each student's progress throughout their course.

At the end of most study books (but not on all courses) you will find a number of self assessment and/or assignment questions which require written answers to be sent to your personal tutor.

These questions are provided in the form most usually found in the relevant examinations (if appropriate) and are designed to satisfy both you and your tutor that you have understood, rather than just read, the subject matter covered in the course text.  They will, of course, also provide you with valuable experience in developing the examination skills most of our students will need to acquire.

Your tutor will mark your written assignments, provide appropriate comments and suggestions and a comprehensive assessment sheet which will enable you to monitor your progress and clearly identify any areas that merit further study.

Throughout your course you will have access to help, advice, support and encouragement from your own personal tutor via the Royal Mail, the telephone and e-mail.  Written questions and enquiries are dealt with promptly (usually within a few days) and, depending on the time of year, you may expect your assignments to be returned to you within approximately 14 days.

Except for advanced and degree level courses (RHS Advanced, RHS Dip Hort, RHS M Hort. etc) where independent research and the use of standard reference works is essential, each course is complete in itself and any further reading or research is optional.  However we do, of course, encourage you to read as widely as possible. Open and distance learning is very much a '
made to measure' exercise; you are free to study when you wish, for as long as you wish (or have the time for) and at a speed that suits you and your lifestyle.  Having said that, continuity of study is essential for good progress and such freedom is, necessarily, subject to some constraints (please see our terms & conditions of enrolment for details) and a studentship of two years.

Whether you are studying to further your career, embark upon a completely new one or simply to further and widen your existing knowledge and interests, you will find that horticulture is a truly fascinating subject.
